PITTSBURGH -- Many eagerly anticipated Tyler Glasnow's first career start at PNC Park. Discomfort in his throwing shoulder ensured it wasn't a long one.
Glasnow, rated by MLBPipeline.com as the top Pirates prospect and the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball, left his second Major League start while facing the third hitter of the fourth inning of what ended up as a 7-4 Pittsburgh win over Philadelphia on Saturday. The Pirates then placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, recalling fellow righty A.J. Schugel from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Glasnow appeared to react awkwardly after throwing a 2-0 called strike to Peter Bourjos with two on and no out in a 2-2 game. Manager Clint Hurdle and team trainer Todd Tomczyk quickly came out to examine Glasnow and talk to the rookie, who soon thereafter walked off the mound to the dugout.
Hurdle said on Saturday that the 22-year-old Glasnow did not tell him his shoulder was bothering him; Glasnow said he did not attempt to talk Hurdle and Tomczyk into letting him stay in the game.
"Just visually, we looked at him moving his arm around -- didn't like how it looked and looked like it was uncomfortable," Hurdle said. "So we went out at that time and talked to him and removed him."

Glasnow stopped short of blaming the shoulder for what was an erratic outing -- he allowed nine baserunners (four hits, three walks and two hit batters) in three-plus innings, getting charged with two runs (one earned). He had two strikeouts, but the Phillies stole five bases in five attempts against him. Glasnow also was charged with an error.
Not the Major League home debut he was looking for.
"It's hard for me to come up here and tell everyone that my shoulder was bad so I threw bad," said Glasnow, who was recalled earlier Saturday to make his first start in the Majors since his debut in St. Louis on July 7. "But I definitely wasn't 100 percent, but it was one of those things where you got to go out. You're not going to be 100 percent a lot of games. You just have to go out and throw with what you have, so I'm not blaming anything on anything."
Hurdle did not give any information on the Pirates' rotation going forward. The team has two off-days next week and had been planning to use four starters for the immediate future.
Glasnow has been one of the best starters in Triple-A this season for Indianapolis. He leads the International League in strikeouts and opponents batting average and is third in ERA.
