After marathon, Mets add pitching reinforcement

Bashlor, Peterson recalled, while Flexen and O'Rourke are optioned

MILWAUKEE -- Pressed for arms after using the entire bullpen in Saturday night’s 18-inning loss at Milwaukee, the Mets recalled pitchers and from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned pitchers and Ryan O’Rourke.

Both Bashlor and Peterson were used during the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Brewers at Miller Park on Sunday. Peterson went 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Jason Vargas exited with hamstring tightness, and Bashlor pitched 1 1/3 scoreless, striking out Christian Yelich.

“Bash has been throwing the ball well lately,” manager Mickey Callaway said Sunday. “He started off a little rough in Triple-A [Syracuse] this year. He seems to have everything under control now and he’s been clicking. Plus slider, we know the velo’s going to be there.”

Bashlor, 0-3 with a 4.22 ERA in 24 games with the Mets last season, was 2-1 with a 5.84 ERA in 11 relief appearances at Triple-A so far in 2019. The right-hander has allowed 14 hits in 12 1/3 innings with 12 strikeouts.

Peterson had a 4.50 ERA in four relief appearances with the Mets this season before being optioned to Syracuse on April 10. The right-hander was 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA in seven games at Syracuse.

“We talked to both of those guys and brought them in and said just throw the ball over the plate and give yourselves a chance,” Callaway said. “They’re going to have to step up and do something special for us to win a game tonight in a situation they normally wouldn’t be in and we know they can go do it.”

Flexen, called up Saturday, walked the bases loaded with one out in the 18th and then allowed Ryan Braun’s two-run single that gave the Brewers a 4-3 victory after the Mets had taken the lead in the top half.

O’Rourke walked two of the three hitters he faced Saturday night.

Bashlor said he was notified of the move about 1:30 a.m. and caught a 5:45 a.m. flight from Syracuse.

“It’s good to be here,” he said. “I’m not tired. I may be tired, but I don’t feel tired.”

The Mets’ bullpen covered 10 scoreless innings in relief of Zack Wheeler before the Brewers broke through in the 18th.

Callaway said that Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman would not be available after each pitched three innings Saturday, but the manager wasn’t sure about their availability for Monday’s series opener at San Diego.

“We have to see how they play catch, but definitely down today,” Callaway said.
