France turns wild double play ... without taking a step?

October 16th, 2022

When you're watching a baseball game, especially in the postseason, you truly never know what you're going to see. You might very well see something you've never seen before, no matter how long you've been a baseball fan.

During the Mariners' 1-0 loss in 18 innings in Game 3 of the ALDS on Saturday, something happened at T-Mobile Park that most had never witnessed. With Houston's Martín Maldonado at first and nobody out in the top of the fifth, Jose Altuve hit a broken-bat popup to first base that was coming down right over the bag.

Mariners first baseman Ty France made the catch. So far, ho-hum.

But upon catching the ball, France immediately realized that Maldonado, whose head was literally right beneath France's arm as France reached up to make the play, was inexplicably still not back to the bag.

France dropped a nonchalant tag on Maldonado before the latter could get his foot back on the bag, and it turned into one of the strangest double plays you'll ever see.
