Twins-White Sox PPD; twin bill set for July 19

June 28th, 2021

CHICAGO -- The series opener between the White Sox and Twins, scheduled for Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, was postponed due to rain.

This cancelled game will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader on Monday, July 19, with Game 1 starting at 4:10 p.m. CT, followed by the nightcap approximately 30-45 minutes after the conclusion of the opener. Both games will be seven innings, and the White Sox and Twins can add a 27th player for both games of the twin bill. The two teams are now set for a four-game series in Chicago from July 19-21.

“Within an hour or two that we were here, Major League Baseball tracks this stuff and was already in touch with [general manager] Rick [Hahn],” said White Sox manager Tony La Russa of Monday’s afternoon storms, which seemed to clear up by the evening. “It was within minutes after [Michael] Kopech finished throwing [a simulated game] and Billy Hamilton and Zack [Collins] maybe got eight minutes of swings, they pulled it, and it started to storm with lightning and thunder. I just figured, no chance.”

Lucas Giolito, who was scheduled to start Monday for the White Sox, and Kenta Maeda, who was set to throw for the Twins, instead will pitch Tuesday. Minnesota will throw Bailey Ober on Wednesday and José Berríos Thursday afternoon.

La Russa indicated the White Sox rotation could just move back one day, meaning Dylan Cease starts Wednesday and Carlos Rodón on Thursday. But the White Sox could bring back Lance Lynn on Wednesday after he threw 47 pitches over three innings against the Mariners Saturday afternoon before the game was suspended due to inclement weather.

Rodón, who last pitched Friday at home against the Mariners, could work on regular rest Wednesday with Lynn moving to Thursday. That change would move Cease to Friday in Detroit, a team against which he has posted an 8-0 record with a 2.09 ERA over eight career starts.

“We are going to look if we push everybody back a day or something more creative that we do,” La Russa said.

Fans with tickets and parking coupons to Monday’s postponed game can use the value as a gift certificate to any future White Sox regular-season home game. All exchanges can be done at the Guaranteed Rate Field box office.

Tickets for Monday’s postponed game do not transfer to the July 19 straight doubleheader or any future date. Fans must exchange or purchase new tickets to attend any future game, including the doubleheader vs. Minnesota.
