Twins do their job … now they’re White Sox fans
DETROIT -- The Twins have done their part. Now, all they can do is wait.
A pair of rookies who burst onto the scene and have quickly shown their value gave Minnesota another huge win over the Tigers on Wednesday. In his final start before he briefly leaves the Twins to get married, Randy Dobnak gave himself a nice wedding present with his finest Major League start of the season, and Luis Arraez opened the floodgates late with a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh that helped push Minnesota to a 5-1 victory.
The Twins had entered the game with a magic number of two to clinch their first American League Central division title since 2010, needing a win over Detroit and a Cleveland loss to the White Sox to secure their crown. Minnesota did its job.
But because the Indians and White Sox got underway 90 minutes after first pitch in Detroit, the Twins departed the field with the out-of-town scoreboard in right-center field showing an early 4-1 lead for Chicago. They gathered around televisions in the visitors' clubhouse underneath the stands down the first-base line at Comerica Park to see if the celebration could officially get underway.
If Minnesota can clinch its ticket to October on Wednesday night or in the days to come, Dobnak figures to play prominently into its pitching plans. At this point, the rookie has essentially forced the team's hand.
The 24-year-old Dobnak began the season in Class A Advanced Fort Myers, debuted as a reliever on Aug. 9 and later pitched as an opener twice before the Twins gave him more traditional starts. He added to his impressive resume with six dominant innings against the Tigers, allowing only one unearned run on one hit. Dobnak struck out six without issuing a walk.
