Story leaves Sox camp for birth of first child
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Trevor Story’s whirlwind week took an exciting turn on Friday when the star infielder left Red Sox camp and flew home to Texas to be with his wife, Mallie, for the birth of the couple’s first child.
Story, who officially signed a six-year, $140-million contract with Boston on Wednesday, had been set to make his Grapefruit League debut for his new team on Saturday.
That will have to wait a bit as the right-handed hitter welcomes a new family member.
“He went home. So now we’re just hoping that everything goes well and he gets there on time and we’ll see,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “He went home this morning. So now it’s just waiting to see if everything goes well and then we’ll decide when he comes back and all that, but right now, I think baseball is on the back burner. What a week.”
When Story gets back, he will have to play catch-up, given that his Spring Training was delayed by his free agent status.
“We don’t take Trevor’s situation as a setback,” said Cora. “It’s the other way around. We’re very happy for him. But we’re going to have to map it out with him, what are we going to do for the rest of the spring?”
Story is learning a new position at second base and will have less than two weeks to get ready for Opening Day on April 7 at Yankee Stadium. Cora sounded confident the team’s prized acquisition will have time to get ready, even though it will be a sprint.
“Yeah, he’s a good athlete,” Cora said.
