Rockies shortstop Trevor Story’s season has been strange and often unlucky. On Sunday, it turned painful -- but at least he was a bit lucky.

Story, who homered in the third inning of an 8-4 loss to the D-backs at Chase Field, left after being hit on the right index finger by a Chris Devenski pitch in the eighth. However, X-rays did not show a break. Story stayed in to run the bases, but he was replaced on defense in the bottom of the frame.

“Trevor, we think, is going to be fine,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “He had X-rays, they were negative, so I think we dodged a bullet there.”

Black said it’s “too early to tell” if the ailment -- which, thus far, is being considered a bruise -- will be bad enough to keep Story out of Monday night’s series opener against the Giants at Coors Field. The injured index finger is on Story's throwing hand, so it's the last finger to leave the baseball on a throw and therefore a key component to velocity and accuracy.

Story has hit balls hard from the start of the season. However, he didn't hit his first homer until April 23, as those balls had been either going off the tops of walls or to the deepest parts of Coors Field. During Colorado's 2-5 road trip, he went 6-for-25, with all but one of those hits going for extra bases. He homered in each of the final two games at Arizona.
