No. 1 Boston prospect Mayer homers again
His career might be young, but the No. 4 pick in the 2021 Draft is already finding his power stroke.
After smashing his first professional home run Saturday, Marcelo Mayer followed with his second blast in his next game Monday.
MLB Pipeline's No. 9 overall prospect went 1-for-3 on the day, walking twice and stealing his first base with the Rookie-level Florida Complex League Red Sox. Mayer was a big catalyst in the team's 11-1 seven-inning win over the FCL Braves, scoring all three times he reached base.
The solo shot by the freshly minted top Red Sox prospect accounted for his fifth RBI in two games and his sixth of the year.
While Mayer’s .226 average through eight games may cause some to do a double take, his .803 OPS paints a better picture. Three of the 18-year-old shortstop's seven hits have gone for extra bases, and he’s reached base in six of those eight appearances.
