Wednesday's top prospect performers
Here's a look at Wednesday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:
Angels: Reid Detmers, LHP (MLB No. 57), Double-A Rocket City
Detmers only went four innings on Wednesday, but he struck out seven and allowed only one batter to reach base via a single in the second inning. It’s just the second start all year that Detmers didn’t walk a batter as he lowered his ERA to 3.60. The 2020 first-rounder (10th overall pick) has now struck out 91 batters in 50 innings. Cardinals: Juan Yepez, OF/1B (No. 16), Triple-A Memphis
As Yepez continues to climb the ladder of the Cards’ farm system, he just keeps hitting. The 23-year-old recorded his second-straight multihit game, this time doing so in emphatic fashion with two home runs, three RBIs and a walk. Yepez has recorded a hit in nine of his past 10 games and since being promoted to Triple-A at the beginning of June, he’s slashed .291/.384/.512 with five home runs and 14 RBIs. Giants: Jairo Pomares, OF (No. 14), Low-A San Jose
Back issues kept Pomares out to start the season, but since making his debut on June 15, he has done nothing but hit. For the second night in a row, Pomares smacked a homer and a double en route to a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Through 18 games, the 20-year-old Cuban is slashing an insane .386/.442/.786 with six home runs and 10 doubles. He’s recorded at least one hit in all but three games. Giants prospect stats »
Mariners: Joe Rizzo, 3B (No. 27), Double-A Arkansas
Rizzo broke out for a big performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a homer while driving in four of Arkansas’ five runs on the night. Rizzo’s homer was his fourth in 11 games and his eighth of the season -- he’s now two homers shy of his career high of 10 he set through 129 games in 2019. The former second-round pick is slashing .230/.319/.410 through 49 games in his first Double-A season. Mariners prospect stats »
Orioles: Drew Rom, LHP (No. 25), High-A Aberdeen
Make that two consecutive scoreless outings for Rom, who struck out six over five innings of three-hit ball on Wednesday. The 2018 fourth-rounder brought his ERA down to 2.85 and has given up two or fewer earned runs in every game (11 starts) but one, where he was tagged for seven runs on seven hits on June 13. Since then, he’s pitched to a 0.64 ERA. Orioles prospect stats »
Phillies: Logan O’Hoppe, C (No. 24), High-A Jersey Shore
O’Hoppe went a combined 4-for-6 with a homer and six RBIs across 16 innings of a doubleheader, tallying two hits in each game and extending his hit streak to seven. Four of O’Hoppe’s RBIs came in Game 1, when he hit a sac fly before lacing a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth to give his team the lead en route to a 10-9 extra-inning victory. He added a two-run single in Game 2 to help complete the doubleheader sweep of Wilmington. In his past 10 games, the 21-year-old is batting .297 with 12 runs batted in. Phillies prospect stats »
Pirates: Michael Burrows, RHP (No. 27), High-A Greensboro
It was a day of highs for Burrows. The 21-year-old fanned 10 over 5 1/3 innings, both season highs, and gave up just one hit to bring his ERA and WHIP down to 2.30 and 0.88, respectively. Burrows walked the leadoff man in the fifth inning before inducing a pop-up and being pulled, and that run eventually came around to score to account for the only earned run he gave up on the evening. The 2018 Draft pick has struck out 62 over 43 innings. Pirates prospect stats »
Reds: Bryce Bonnin, RHP (No. 16), Low-A Daytona
You could say Bonnin’s season debut for the Tortugas after starting the year on the injured list went well. The 2020 third-rounder struck out 11 across five perfect frames in his first career Low-A start, throwing 44 of his 60 pitches for strikes. In a solid display of control and command, Bronnin struck out the side in the second and fourth innings and never ran a three-ball count on a hitter. Between his start on Wednesday and the rehab start he made on June 29, Bonnin has struck out 18 in nine innings. Reds prospect stats »
Rockies: Elehuris Montero, 3B (No. 9), Double-A Hartford
Montero has had some big games at the plate lately, but Wednesday’s was the first time this season that the 22-year-old has gone deep twice in a game, his first multihomer game since 2018. Montero finished the night 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and nine total bases, good for his fourth multihit game in his past 10 contests. He’s now slashing .251/.345/.482 with 11 home runs through 54 games. Rockies prospect stats »
Yankees: Ken Waldichuk, LHP (No. 27), Double-A Somerset
Waldichuk continues to find his footing in Double-A. The 2019 fifth-rounder tossed five innings of three-hit ball, giving up one run and two walks while striking out six en route to earning the win. Waldichuk earned a promotion after giving up zero earned runs in 30 2/3 innings (seven starts) for High-A Hudson Valley, and he’s pitched to a 3.15 ERA in four Double-A starts thus far with 31 strikeouts across 20 innings.
