Thursday's top prospect performers

July 2nd, 2021

Here's a look at Thursday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

Giants: Joey Bart, C (MLB No. 17), Triple-A Sacramento
Bart hit his eighth homer of the year as part of a 3-for-4 night for Sacramento. The 24-year-old, the No. 2 overall pick from the 2018 Draft, is hitting .344 in Triple-A with an OPS of .994 (33 games). Giants prospects stats »

Dodgers: Keibert Ruiz, C (MLB No. 41), Triple-A Oklahoma City
Ruiz didn’t have as much success as he would’ve liked in his short stint in Los Angeles at the beginning of May (1-for-7, five strikeouts), but he’s continued to rake since returning to Oklahoma City. Ruiz had two home runs and knocked in five runs in a 3-for-4 day against Salt Lake. His average and OPS jumped to .290 and 1.018, respectively, and the Dodgers’ top prospect now has 11 home runs with 17 walks to just 18 strikeouts at the Triple-A level in 2021. Nationals: Cade Cavalli, RHP (MLB No. 77), Double-A Harrisburg
Cavalli may still be adjusting to the upper levels of Minor League ball, as he allowed three runs for the first time in three starts with the Senators. In five innings against the Patriots on Thursday, Cavalli also gave up four hits and walked three while his ERA bumped up to 3.78 with Harrisburg. The positive news? Cavalli continues to mow down opposing hitters. He struck out nine Somerset batters in the game, increasing his total to 97 over just 57 1/3 innings in the Minors. Nationals prospects stats »

Blue Jays: Sem Robberse, RHP (No. 25), Low-A Dunedin
Making his second relief appearance of the season, Robberse entered the game in the third inning and delivered five no-hit frames for Dunedin. The 22-year-old walked two and struck out a season-high eight, including the side in the fifth inning. Outside of his last outing when he surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings, Robberse pitched well in June, finishing the month with a 3.79 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 19 frames. Braves: Braden Shewmake, SS (No. 4), Double-A Mississippi
Shewmake’s early season struggles had his average at .099 entering June, but he’s managed to flip that story on its head over the last month. Following a 2-for-5 night against Montgomery on Thursday, Shewmake is now slashing .196/.247/.362 on the year. He hit his fifth home run of the season leading off the second inning, and his RBI double that sparked a six-run top of the 10th put the Braves ahead to stay. Braves prospects stats »

Cardinals: Edwin Nunez, RHP (No. 10), Low-A Palm Beach
Despite some staggering numbers coming into Thursday (13.92 ERA, 2.53 WHIP), there’s a reason Nunez is ranked among the top 10 prospects in the Cardinals’ organization. He proved that with his best outing out of Palm Beach’s bullpen against Dunedin. Nunez struck out seven while not allowing a single hit to the Blue Jays over 3 1/3 innings, extending a no-hitter that began with John Beller’s three no-hit innings. Nunez was still hit with an unearned after a seventh-inning walk that ended his outing, but he did lower his ERA to 12.04. Cardinals prospects stats »

Indians: Logan Allen, LHP (No. 22), High-A Lake County
Coming off six shutout innings during his last time out, Allen matched his season high and allowed two unearned runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. The southpaw dealt 58 of his 90 pitches for strikes and dropped his ERA to 1.58 for the season as the Captains finished off a Thursday doubleheader sweep of the Cubs. Allen has only failed to complete the sixth inning once since May 26 and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his nine starts for the season. Indians prospect stats »

Marlins: Jake Eder, LHP (No. 22), Double-A Pensacola
Eder improved on his elite ERA, opponents’ average and WHIP (1.13, .152 and 0.90 coming into Thursday, respectively) with another solid outing against Biloxi. In five innings, Eder struck out five batters, walked three and allowed just two hits and no runs. It’s already Eder’s fifth shutout start of the year and his sixth without giving up an earned run, and he’s now made it through the fifth in all but one of his 10 starts. Marlins prospects stats »

Orioles: Drew Rom, LHP (No. 25), High-A Aberdeen
Rom had his finest start of the season Thursday, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and no walks and striking out six. He’s proving to be more durable as the Minor League season closes in on its third month, with all three of his six-inning outings (tied for his longest of the year) coming in his last five starts. With no Brooklyn runners crossing the plate before the game was called due to rain in the bottom of the sixth, Rom finished his day with no runs allowed for only the second time all season. Padres: Reiss Knehr, RHP (No. 12), Double-A San Antonio
Knehr pitched his second scoreless outing of the season in the second game of the doubleheader against Corpus Christi. His five innings of two-hit, three-walk ball led the way in the Missions’ shutout of the Hooks, and his seven punchouts marked only the second time he’s struck out seven or more hitters in a game in almost two years. Knehr is already well on his way to surpass the 66 1/3 innings he tossed in 2019, and the uptick in strikeouts Thursday signaled the 89 he recorded that season is well within reach, too. Pirates: Cal Mitchell, OF (No. 17), Double-A Altoona
Maybe the Curve’s game versus the Yard Goats getting suspended on Wednesday was a good thing for Mitchell. After grounding out in his first at-bat, he could hardly stop hitting the ball when play resumed Thursday. Mitchell finished the first game of the doubleheader 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs. The only blemish came when he struck out swinging to end the top of the fifth -- the same inning he led off with a solo shot. Mitchell also extended his on-base streak to nine straight games. Rays: Curtis Mead, 2B (No. 30), Low-A Charleston
Mead continues to hit the ball well in his first season with Low-A Charleston. Coming into Thursday with a .337 average and a .918 OPS, Mead homered and doubled in his first two at-bats, respectively, and then added a solo shot in the eighth on his way to a 4-for-5 day against Kannapolis. The output continued Mead’s eight-game hitting streak, and he flashed a bit of power with his first longballs since June 16. He also recorded four RBIs in a game for the first time in the Minors. Yankees: Anthony Volpe, SS (No. 11), Low-A Tampa
It only took seven innings for Volpe to have himself a day at the plate on Thursday. Batting in the leadoff spot against the Hammerheads, Volpe singled in the first and walked in the third before capping his performance with a grand slam in the fourth. Volpe now has a 22-game on-base streak, and he’s got a .316 average and a 1.082 OPS on the year. His four RBIs on the night tied his second-highest total for the season. Yankees prospects stats »
