White Sox manager Tony La Russa will not be with the team on Thursday for the Field of Dreams contest against the Yankees in Dyersville, Iowa, in order to attend a brother-in-law's funeral.

La Russa explained the situation to the media prior to Wednesday afternoon’s series finale against the Twins at Target Field.

“I waited until today just to be as least distracting as possible, but I have an older sister [and] her husband passed away in Tampa, Fla., recently,” La Russa said. “And they had to schedule the funeral service depending on everybody’s availability, and we’ve got a large family. And that day happens to be tomorrow.”

Bench coach Miguel Cairo will manage the White Sox during Thursday’s special game, with La Russa planning to watch the game with his family after the service. There’s an off-day for both teams on Friday, and La Russa’s goal is to return to the team for Game 2 of the series Saturday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Carlos Rodón, the originally scheduled starter for the White Sox in Iowa, was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday morning with left shoulder fatigue. He returned to Chicago to have his shoulder examined, with Lance Lynn moving back one day to make the Field of Dreams start.
