ST. PETERSBURG --  never had to own a pair of glasses. Blessed with 20/20 vision, having a keen eye at the plate played a large role in his ability to reach the Majors.

Knowing the importance of good vision, Kemp doesn’t take his eyesight for granted. That’s why the A’s second baseman has decided to partner with HCP Cureblindness. In an effort to help the organization’s mission to eradicate preventable and curable blindness throughout under-resourced communities, Kemp is donating $100 for every walk he draws this season.

Entering Friday’s game against the Rays, Kemp’s five walks led the A’s and were tied for fourth most in the American League.

“I kind of was just looking up how I can help and what I could do and found the HCP program,” Kemp said. “They were doing great things and I kind of was just like, ‘I would love to help.’ That’s kind of where it stemmed from. Because it deals with eyesight, I felt like it was good to do walks.”

Part of the inspiration for getting involved in the cause was his wife, Michelle, who has struggled with her eyesight throughout her life.

“She’ll get up in the middle of the night and drop her glasses or can’t find her glasses,” Kemp said. “Just always seeing that. I feel like sometimes people with good eyesight kind of take it for granted. There’s a lot of people out there that have to have surgery to be able to see.

“I’m just trying to bring some awareness to the situation. Not everyone can just wake up and see perfectly.”
