Relievers of the Month: Kahnle, Lugo
Tommy Kahnle and Seth Lugo have been named American League and National League Relievers of the Month presented by The Hartford, respectively, for July.
This is Kahnle’s first such honor, making him the third different Yankees reliever to win the award since it began in 2005, joining Aroldis Chapman (twice) and Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera (twice). Chapman was the Yankees’ most recent winner, in May of this season.
It is Lugo’s first Reliever of the Month award as well. He’s the second Mets pitcher to garner such honors, joining Billy Wagner (July 2007).
Kahnle posted a 0.77 ERA in 12 appearances for the Yankees in July, notching 17 strikeouts while not surrendering a homer. He allowed just one run and five hits, walking two batters.
Lugo did not give up a run over 12 outings in July. He struck out 16 batters and walked just one, allowing a .075 opponent batting average.
