Do you get déjà vu? Cards infielder Edman does

ST. LOUIS -- Not long after hitting the first walk-off home run of his MLB career, being mobbed by his teammates and doused with water, standout second baseman/shortstop Tommy Edman experienced some serious déjà vu. In this instance, his nostalgia stretched from his college days as a Cardinal -- while playing at Stanford -- to Saturday’s moment with the Cardinals -- the St. Louis variety.
On Saturday, Edman ended a day filled mostly with offensive frustration for the Cardinals by hitting a 2-1 pitch into the bullpen for a two-run home run that lifted St. Louis to a 5-4 victory. Just a bit more detail about the home run that gave the Cards their first and only lead of the day: It came with a runner on second and when they were down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth.
Oddly enough, Edman was in an eerily similar situation slightly more than eight years earlier while playing for Stanford in the NCAA Tournament. Similar as in, the same 4-3 score, also a man on second and Edman at the plate with the game on the line. As you can see in this video, the result was the same.
“So, the last walk-off I had was in college to win a regional my freshman year,” Edman said. “We were like the three seed, and we were playing Indiana, who was a top-five seed [in the country] at the time. It was the exact same situation -- we were down 4-3, there was a runner on second and I got up and hit a two-run homer to advance us to the Super Regional. A fun fact is that the catcher [for Indiana] was Kyle Schwarber.
“[The memory hit me] after, for sure,” Edman added. “I was like, ‘This seems kind of familiar! Oh yeah, I have done this before -- what, eight years ago?’ Maybe I had [a walk-off hit] in the Minors, but that was my last walk-off homer, for sure, the one in college.”
