Friedl caps 4-hit day with Reds win in Game 2
CINCINNATI -- TJ Friedl has bounced between Triple-A Louisville and the big leagues more than the majority of Reds players this season. But right now, there’s nobody on the roster swinging a hotter bat.
After recording his first career multihomer game in the opener of Sunday’s doubleheader, Friedl recorded two more hits in a 10-0 series finale victory over the Rockies in Game 2.
Friedl was recalled on Aug. 16 to replace Donovan Solano on the paternity list but stuck around when outfielder Albert Almora Jr. went to the injured list just days later. After getting his first taste of the big leagues last season, appearing in 14 games, it’s safe to say he’s made the most of his time in Cincinnati this season. In his last 15 games, he’s slashing .383/.444/.830 with five home runs and 11 RBIs.
“When I got called back up, I’ve always said from Day 1, I just want to help the team win, do whatever I can to make an impact,” Freidl said. “This time around, coming up, I just changed my swing a little bit, wanted to be more aggressive and make the most of my opportunities up here. Help them win however I can.”
Friedl hasn't made any drastic changes to his swing, but it’s in his approach where he’s made the biggest impact on the Reds’ lineup.
“[I’m] just swinging at better pitches, making better swing decisions and knowing my strengths,” Friedl said. “Just trying to hit the ball hard every at-bat.”
“He’s playing great,” manager David Bell said. “He’s on a mission just to show who he is. Not doing anything more. He believes he belongs here, he believes he's an everyday player and he’s out to just go out and play the game.
“The great thing about the way he is playing is he’s playing well, of course individually, but it's all about the team, it’s all about supporting his teammates and really doing what he can to win a game. Good things are happening to him.”
While Friedl starred at the plate in Game 1, the Reds challenged the Rockies with a much more balanced offensive attack in Game 2, striking for nine hits from six different hitters. One of those was off the bat of outfielder Aristides Aquino -- who replaced Jonathan India after India fouled a pitch off his shin. Aquino launched his first career grand slam off of Rockies right-hander Chad Smith to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning.
