Hot-hitting Locastro recalled from Reno
Joseph optioned to Triple-A; Tuesday starter vs. Rays still TBD
DENVER -- The D-backs recalled outfielder Tim Locastro from Triple-A Reno on Friday to take the place of catcher Caleb Joseph, who was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move.
With a three-game series in Coors Field beginning Friday, the D-backs wanted to ensure they had some additional coverage in the outfield, which necessitated the move.
Locastro can play all three outfield positions, runs well, and can also play the infield if needed. This is his second stint with Arizona this year, and he hit .364/.563/.364 in 16 plate appearances earlier this year.
Locastro has also been swinging a hot bat for Reno. On April 25, he hit three homers and drove home six runs against Fresno, the same night his teammate Kevin Cron hit three homers.
“First time I did that,” Locastro said of hitting three homers. “And first time I hit a grand slam. Both in the same night. So I knocked two things off my baseball bucket list. It was fun. I was locked in.”
Locastro was optioned to Reno on April 20 after the D-backs acquired Blake Swihart from the Red Sox, and Locastro was quick to turn the page and get to work.
“When I was with the Dodgers, guys would get sent down and you’d see the way they conduct themselves and they were really good about it," Locastro said. “You sort of learn from them that you can’t sulk and you’ve just got to be ready to go and that’s what I was trying to do. I was hoping to do what I did to get back up here.”
More moves coming
D-backs manager Torey Lovullo hopes to be able to name a starter for Tuesday's game against the Rays in Tampa Bay within the next 24 hours.
Reno right-hander Taylor Clarke appears to be the front-runner for the role, which replaces Zack Godley, who has been moved from the rotation to the bullpen after struggling to start the year.
“We know we’re going to have somebody from within the system start on that day,” Lovullo said.
When Clarke, or whoever is chosen to start, gets called up, the team will likely demote a position player and go with a short bench initially.
“I think it’s easy to predict it would probably be that,” Lovullo said.
Catcher Alex Avila, who has been on the injured list with a strained left quadriceps muscle, could be ready to return when the team returns from their six-game road trip, which would bring the D-backs back to 13 position players and three catchers.
