CHICAGO -- The Tigers optioned right-hander Bobby Parnell to Triple-A Toledo after Monday's 10-9 loss in extra innings to the White Sox and recalled right-hander Buck Farmer from Toledo on Tuesday.
Parnell pitched one inning, surrendering one earned run on two hits and a walk Monday. Parnell also allowed two inherited runners to score as part of the White Sox coming back from down 7-0 to win in 12 innings. The game moved Parnell's ERA to 7.36 in four Major League appearances this season.
Farmer gives the Tigers a fresh arm after using six pitchers Monday. He has a 2.19 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings this season with the Tigers.
Farmer was most recently optioned to Toledo when the Tigers called up Parnell on June 1. He has a 5.54 ERA in seven Minor League starts.
Despite pitching well in the Majors, this is the third time he has been recalled this season. Farmer has become something of a "toggle guy" for the Tigers, but that doesn't mean he couldn't earn a permanent spot with the club.
"He fits into that category, but shoot, if he's pitching well and someone else isn't, we're going to keep the guy who's pitching well," manager Brad Ausmus said. "It's a performance game."
