Wilson fractures leg after being hit by liner
DETROIT -- Tigers reliever Alex Wilson sustained a fractured right fibula when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Joe Mauer in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the Twins at Comerica Park.
Mauer's eighth-inning liner had an exit velocity of 102.8 mph, according to Statcast™. Wilson, who was facing his first batter of the game, took the line drive off his right shin and collapsed to the ground. He got back up and tried to plead his case to stay in the game, but fell down again when he tried to throw a warmup pitch.
Wilson's injury comes on the same day he posted on Instagram that his daughter, Rosie, suffered a cracked collarbone.
Wilson is the second Tigers reliever to be hit by a comebacker this week. Jeff Ferrell was struck on the side of his head Monday by a Ryon Healy liner that had a 103.8 mph exit velocity. He suffered a bruise above his right ear but avoided a fracture; he remains in concussion protocol.
