Players of the Week: Hernández, Gilbert
Blue Jays outfielder Teoscar Hernández and D-backs pitcher Tyler Gilbert have been named the Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet.
Hernández's huge week included eight runs scored, three home runs and 10 RBIs. Across seven games, the Dominican native Hernández led all AL players in batting average (.500), hits (14) and total bases (25).
The highlight of his week came during Wednesday’s 10-2 drubbing of the Angels, when he clubbed a grand slam over the left-field fence to break a fifth-inning tie.
The 28-year-old outfielder has been on a torrid stretch of late, hitting .431 (25-for-58) in 16 games during the month of August as well as .355 (38-for-107) through 30 games following the All-Star break.
This is the third consecutive week a Blue Jays outfielder has received AL Player of the Week honors, following an incredible two-week run by teammate George Springer.
Gilbert earned NL Player of the Week following a historic performance Saturday night, when he became the fourth player to throw a no-hitter in his first career start.
The California native surrendered three walks and recorded five strikeouts across his nine innings of work, becoming the third pitcher in D-backs history to throw a solo no-hitter.
Including three relief appearances earlier this month, the 27-year-old Gilbert sports a spotless 0.00 ERA with 10 strikeouts across 12 2/3 innings pitched.
