TBS' Johnson to miss postseason due to health

Veteran announcer was diagnosed with blood clots, preventing him from flying

October 1st, 2018

Ernie Johnson, the well-respected and recognized sportscaster, will not be a part of TBS' postseason coverage, he announced through the network on Monday. Johnson was diagnosed with blood clots in both legs recently while undergoing a physical and was advised not to fly.

"I talked to the bosses at Turner and lots of discussions with my family, and the best course of action is to just stay grounded at this point and not fly. During this time, when you are doing the playoffs, there's a lot of flights in a compressed time, and blood clots are nothing to be messed with. As tough as it is for me to miss baseball's postseason, it's the thing to do."

Johnson was slated to do play-by-play commentary for the Indians-Astros matchup in the American League Division Series presented by T-Mobile, which begins Friday in Houston. He will be replaced by Don Orsillo, who will call the series with Dennis Eckersley and Hazel Mae.

Johnson has called regular-season games in the past but has had a predominant presence in the playoffs since TBS began airing the postseason in 2007. Johnson is better known for his NBA coverage on TNT, where he works as a studio host based at Turner's headquarters in Atlanta, and he will continue work in that role on Tuesday.
Johnson overcame a bout with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between 2003-06.
