Cobb undergoes Tommy John surgery

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays manager Kevin Cash announced Thursday that right-hander Alex Cobb underwent successful Tommy John surgery.

The procedure took place in Pensacola, Fla., and was completed by Dr. James Andrews.

"Everything I've heard is that it went really well," Cash said. "Now the rehab process starts. We look forward to seeing him when we get back to Tampa here in six days."

The Rays announced last Friday that Cobb would need Tommy John surgery after he suffered a setback on May 3 while trying to rehab from a bout with right forearm tendinitis that caused him to miss the beginning of the season.

Cobb was expected to be Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter this season after posting a 10-9 record and a 2.87 ERA in 2014. In 81 career starts, Cobb owns a 35-23 record with a 3.21 ERA.
