SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- After his first outing of the spring, D-backs right-hander Taijuan Walker described it as a "grind" because of how many pitches the Giants hitters fouled off.
Their at-bats caused him to use up his entire pitch count in one inning.

Sunday, though, against the Cubs, Walker tossed three hitless innings, struck out four and threw 27 of his 36 pitches for strikes in a 2-0 victory at Salt River Fields.
"I just attacked with the fastball," said Walker. "I think I threw all fastballs in the first inning. That's kind of been the game plan, getting that fastball command down and feeling comfortable with it."

A long time coming
It didn't show up in a box score and you won't find it in his official Spring Training statistics, but D-backs outfielder Socrates Brito will savor the home run he hit off Zack Greinke in a back-field game Friday afternoon.
Brito dislocated his left middle finger sliding into home plate last spring and had to have surgery. Then in winter ball, he suffered an injury to his fifth metacarpal on the left hand while playing in the Dominican Republic and was limited early in camp.
"I'm excited because I finally am healthy and everything feels good," Brito said.
You want me to do what?
With outfielder Jarrod Dyson taking things slowly this spring after his season came to an end Sept. 2 due to an injured hernia, Lovullo pinch-ran for him after he beat out an infield single the other day.

The speedy Dyson could not remember the last time he was pinch-run for and what made it all the more interesting was Lovullo's choice -- 6-foot-5 inch first baseman Kevin Cron.
"That was cool," Cron said, laughing. "[Bench coach Jerry Narron] told me I was going to be pinch-running for him and I was like, 'Are you talking to me?'"
Shipley impressive again
Braden Shipley tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday without allowing a hit and striking out two.
It was the second quality outing for Shipley, who is working to set himself up as one of the team's first callups if starting pitching depth is needed, or to claim a spot in the bullpen.
Shipley has not allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings.

Matt Koch will get the start for the D-backs on Monday against the Padres in Peoria, Ariz. (6:40 p.m. MST, MLB Network and MLB.TV). It will be Arizona's first night game of the spring Outfielder Steven Souza Jr. is expected to play, as is Dyson.
