ST. PETERSBURG -- Dr. Poo Poo is moving on. The Orioles on Tuesday released utility man Stevie Wilkerson from his Minor League contract, cutting ties with one of the more popular players of their rebuild. Wilkerson, 29, is now a free agent.

Best known for several mopup pitching performances, Wilkerson became the first position player to record a save in Major League history when he closed out the Orioles’ marathon win over the Angels on July 26, 2019. Manager Brandon Hyde coined the nickname “Dr. Poo Poo” after the game, during which Wilkerson pitched a 1-2-3 16th inning lobbing mid-50-mph balls. It was the first of five pitching appearances Wilkerson would make between 2019-21, all in mopup relief.

Wilkerson appeared in 117 games for the Orioles in ’19, playing primarily center field. He appeared at seven different positions across 163 games from 2018-21, hitting .210 with a .608 OPS .

This is the second time the Orioles have released Wilkerson within the last calendar year. They also did so last September before re-signing him to a Minors deal the following month, after Wilkerson missed the 2020 season due to a fractured left ring finger. Wilkerson began 2021 at Triple-A Norfolk, then hit .167 without a homer in 30 big league games between mid-May and late June. Tuesday’s transaction ends his seven-year tenure in the organization, which began when he was selected in the eighth round of the 2014 Draft.

The team also released six Minor Leaguers on Tuesday: infielder Seth Mejias-Brean, outfielders Craig Lewis and Trevor Kehe, right-handers Jake Zebron and Dallas Litscher and lefty Tyler Erwin. The moves come one day after the organization's promotion of 30 players across three levels in a wide-scale restructuring, with an eye toward 2022.
