Spring Breakout 2024: Results for inaugural prospect showcase
The inaugural Spring Breakout weekend has come to an end after four days filled with competitive showings and eye-popping moments from baseball's future stars. In all, 71 of MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects were tapped to play, along with nearly two-thirds of the 900 players who make up the team Top 30 prospects lists.
Spring Breakout started with the eagerly-anticipated matchup between two first-overall Draft picks. MLB's No. 1 overall prospect Jackson Holliday (Orioles) faced multiple 100-plus mph offerings from the Pirates' Paul Skenes (MLB No. 3) in their second matchup of the spring. Despite weather cancellations, Friday’s games featured strong pitching performances from top Marlins prospects while No. 10 Nats prospect Jarlin Susana clocked in at 103 mph on the radar.
In a full seven-game slate on Day 3, power was the name of the game as No. 4 Rays prospect Xavier Isaac, Yankees No. 2 Spencer Jones and Tigers No. 4 Jace Jung mashed two home runs each. In other action, No. 3 D-backs prospect Druw Jones nearly got the out at home with a cannon from centerfield. The weekend concluded with the longest homer of the showcase, a 455-foot clout from Cardinals No. 30 prospect Joshua Baez.
The Spring Breakout fun isn’t over yet as the rescheduled matchup between the Padres and Mariners is set to take place on March 23.
