SAN DIEGO -- A packed house of Padres fans at Petco Park chanted, "Beat L.A." at the top of their lungs during Game 3 of the National League Division Series on Tuesday night. In the bottom of the second inning, San Diego did its best to do just that.

A six-run rally propelled the Padres to a 6-5 victory over Los Angeles -- and a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. The big inning featured an array of ground balls, a couple of breaks from poor defense and one booming home run by

The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Mookie Betts' homer just out of reach for left fielder Jurickson Profar. The Padres’ response came against right-hander Walker Buehler in the bottom of the second.

It started with Manny Machado reaching on a single to center field to lead off the inning. Jackson Merrill followed with a potential double-play grounder to the right side, but first baseman Freddie Freeman's throw hit Machado in the back and got away for an error that put runners on the corners.

On another potential double-play grounder, by Xander Bogaerts, shortstop Miguel Rojas was late to touch second base and his throw to first base was not in time as Machado scored. David Peralta added a two-run double before Jake Cronenworth reached on a single to the hole at shortstop, where Rojas had no play. Kyle Higashioka's sacrifice fly brought in Peralta and was the first out of the inning.

With two outs, Tatis lifted Buehler's 0-2 pitch deep to left field and watched it fly a Statcast-projected 396 feet as the crowd went wild. As the ball landed in the seats to make it a 6-1 game, Tatis chucked his bat and motioned toward the Padres’ dugout. Then he took his time rounding the bases with his signature hop-step before reaching third base.

The big inning proved crucial when the Dodgers answered with four runs in the third inning to pull within a run.
