Ohtani hits 45th homer for his next step to 50-50

LOS ANGELES -- is now a handful of homers away from making even more history.

With his solo homer in the sixth inning of the Dodgers’ 3-1 loss to the Guardians on Friday at Dodger Stadium, Ohtani is now just five homers away from making a bid at becoming the first 50-50 player in Major League history. Ohtani is also at 46 stolen bases with 21 games left to play. He’s one shy of tying his personal career high in homers, set in 2021.

Ohtani already became the quickest player in Major League history to eclipse the 40-homer and 40-stolen base mark earlier this season. The two-time American League Most Valuable Player also recorded a single in the eighth inning and was being urged by the crowd to steal second base.

But with the Dodgers trailing by two late in the game and Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman due up, Ohtani didn’t attempt to steal. He was later stranded at third base on Chris Taylor’s inning-ending double play.

Still, Ohtani got closer to history with his homer off left-hander Matthew Boyd. At his current pace, it’s seemingly a matter of when, not if, Ohtani will make Major League history yet again.
