KANSAS CITY – A game-tying safety squeeze bunt and a three-run eighth inning got the Royals' offense going on Sunday afternoon, late as those runs came.

took care of the rest in the Royals’ 4-1 win over the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium, sweeping Chicago for the second time this season.

In his first start back after his first All-Star Game, Lugo dazzled for all nine innings, putting together the first complete game of his career while allowing just one run on three hits to win his 12th game of the year. It was the Royals’ first nine-inning complete game with one or fewer runs allowed since Brad Keller shut out the Pirates on Sept. 13, 2020.

The only run Lugo gave up came in the sixth when he hit Nicky Lopez on the foot and gave up back-to-back two-out singles. Otherwise, Lugo cruised through the White Sox lineup, striking out six and walking none. He was at 41 pitches through four innings, 89 through eight. Manager Matt Quatraro sent Lugo back out for the ninth, and he finished the game at 103 pitches.

After being baffled by White Sox starter Drew Thorpe’s changeup and struggling with runners in scoring position early, the Royals' offense came through late to get Lugo the win. Kyle Isbel laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Maikel Garcia and tie the game in the seventh. Bobby Witt Jr. -- who was 9-for-11 this series with a walk, homer and double -- led off the eighth inning with his third hit of the day, marking his third consecutive game with three hits.
