KANSAS CITY -- After a June filled with tests against first-place clubs, the Royals brought out their ace material to close out the month.

who now leads the Major Leagues with 11 wins, dealt six innings of scoreless ball with 10 strikeouts in the Royals’ 6-2 win over the AL Central-leading Guardians on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

It was the second straight scoreless outing for Lugo, who helped power the four-game series win. The Royals are now 5-2 this homestand, and 4-2 against the Guardians this season, putting Kansas City back on track ahead of the July 30 Trade Deadline.

And the formula the Royals used on Sunday was much of the same they had been using all season. Lugo, Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez, three likely All-Star candidates, came through in the finale.

Lugo allowed just one runner to reach second base in his six dominant frames. He yielded just four hits and one walk on 93 pitches, lowering his Major League-best ERA to 2.17. The Royals’ workhorse also leads the Majors in innings pitched (116) and is also tied for seventh in the AL in strikeouts (105).

Witt logged his ninth game with three or more hits, highlighted by an RBI triple to left field in the fifth. He also scored two runs. And Perez, who hustled up the line in 4.83 seconds (his second fastest time this season, per Statcast) to beat out a fielder’s choice and earn an RBI in the first inning, followed that with a 389-foot blast in the seventh to cap the win.
