Schebler likely to begin rehab assignment
Right fielder has missed past month with shoulder injury; Hamilton excited to bat leadoff again
CINCINNATI -- Reds right fielder Scott Schebler (sprained AC joint in right shoulder) will likely embark on a Minor League rehab assignment beginning Sunday, according to interim manager Jim Riggleman.
Per Riggleman, if everything goes well during and after a workout on Saturday, Schebler will begin a rehab assignment and possibly join the club on its upcoming road trip.
"If he plays tomorrow somewhere, I could see where -- if it goes well -- he would meet us probably in Chicago or meet us the last day in Milwaukee," Riggleman said. "If he throws without any issues today, he's going to be playing somewhere [on Sunday]."
Schebler, who has been on the 10-day disabled list since July 18, made around 40 throws from 90 feet on Monday and felt no pain afterward. He then threw and hit on Friday and was scheduled to do the same on Saturday.
Hamilton leading off for Reds again
Center fielder Billy Hamilton made his return to the leadoff spot in the batting order in the first game of a three-game set against San Francisco on Friday. Prior to that, his last start in the leadoff spot came on April 26.
Riggleman said he wanted to get Hamilton comfortable in that role again.
"With so many guys out of the lineup, I felt like it was a good time to go ahead and try [Hamilton] there again," Riggleman said. "My hope is that he stays there. I didn't really want to put him there a couple weeks ago and then take him out of there. I'd like to put him there and leave him there for a while."
Hamilton went 1-for-5 in the leadoff spot in Friday's 2-1 walk-off victory, hitting a single in the first inning off Giants starter Casey Kelly before getting picked off at first base by Kelly. Nevertheless, Hamilton was excited to assume the role again for Cincinnati.
"It feels like Christmas for me," Hamilton said prior to Saturday's game. "I came in and saw the lineup, and I was messing with [Riggleman] like, 'Did your hand slip or something? What happened? Did you mean to put it like that?' It's good to be back up there. It feels great."
"That's the place where he can help the ballclub the most," Riggleman said. "I think his play in the last month or so has indicated that maybe now is the time to do it, and we certainly need it now."
