Recognizing depth has even greater value this year, the Braves added another left-handed power hitter on Friday, when they acquired Scott Schebler from the Reds in exchange for cash considerations.

Schebler has declined since hitting a career-high 30 homers for the Reds in 2017. But this was a no-risk acquisition for the Braves, who are still intrigued by the power potential and speed possessed by this 29-year-old outfielder, who will make the prorated portion of $633,500 while on Atlanta’s active roster.

Schebler will not join the Braves until he undergoes his COVID-19 testing and the club determines whether it’s best for him to join the team in New York or St. Petersburg, where a two-game series against the Rays begins on Monday.

The Braves gained a left-handed slugger when they signed Matt Adams on Monday. But at least while the active roster is expanded through the season’s first month, there could be room for Schebler, who was designated for assignment by the Reds on Sunday.

After producing a .791 OPS during his breakout 2017 season, Schebler hit 17 homers with a .777 OPS in '18. He spent three stints on the injured list last season with injuries to his right oblique, right calf and left shoulder. He underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in August.
