Phillies extend GM Sam Fuld's contract
Assistant GMs Ned Rice, Jorge Velandia also receive extensions
PHILADELPHIA -- Last month, Phillies managing partner John Middleton gave Dave Dombrowski a three-year contract extension, carrying him through the 2027 season.
Middleton wants Dombrowski to finish the job after he built the roster that got the Phillies within two victories of a World Series championship.
Dombrowski paid the favor forward, announcing Monday that he extended general manager Sam Fuld and assistant general managers Ned Rice and Jorge Velandia through the 2025 season. Fuld, 41, has been the Phillies’ GM since December 2020. Rice, 39, has been an assistant GM since January 2016. Velandia, 47, has been assistant GM since December 2020.
The Phillies made the postseason this year for the first time since 2011 and won their first National League pennant since 2009. They had a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven World Series, but they lost the final three games to Houston.
Dombrowski and his top lieutenants have tried to bolster the 2023 roster, signing star shortstop Trea Turner to an 11-year, $300 million contract, right-hander Taijuan Walker to a four-year, $72 million contract and left-hander Matt Strahm to a two-year, $15 million contract.
Dombrowski is the only head of baseball operations to lead four different organizations to the World Series. He is one of only five general managers to win a World Series title with two different teams. Previously, he headed baseball operations for the Expos (1988-91), Marlins (1991-2001), Tigers (2001-15) and Red Sox (2015-19). The 1997 Marlins and 2018 Red Sox won the World Series. The 2006 and 2012 Tigers won the American League pennant.
