Hendrix's early career mementos piling up
LOS ANGELES -- Reliver Ryan Hendrix made his MLB debut Friday, when he pitched a scoreless inning and struck out two batters in a loss against the Cardinals.
On Tuesday, Hendrix reached another milestone in his young big league career. After logging one out in his relief appearance against the Dodgers, Hendrix earned his first big league win in the Reds’ 6-5 comeback victory over Los Angeles.
Hendrix said that the moment was surreal and is something that he’ll remember.
“No, man, [I] can't [believe it],” Hendrix said. “Especially here in L.A., it's a pretty special moment to get that win, have the team behind me and you know, go in the locker room and [have a] big celebration and everything else. It was a fun night to say the least.”
Following his first big league outing, Hendrix was able to get the baseballs from his first two strikeouts and the lineup card from the game. With the milestone Tuesday, Hendrix has added the scorecard from the win to his personal collection of memorabilia.
The Texas native has had heard from multiple friends, family members and older acquaintances after his exciting achievements.
“A lot of classmates and guys I haven't talked to in probably 10 years have reached out to me and contacted me. And actually, I got a couple of high school buddies, they're going to try to make the trip up to Cincy next week,” Hendrix said. “I believe my grandpa -- who I haven't seen in a couple of years -- is going to try to make [his] way down to Cincinnati. So I'm super excited to see that happen.”
Akiyama plays in intrasquad game
Outfielder Shogo Akiyama played in an intrasquad game in Louisville, Ky., as a part of his rehab for a left hamstring injury that has delayed the start of his 2021 season.
Akiyama played six innings on defense and got five at-bats Tuesday, Reds manager David Bell said. Akiyama also ran the bases during the game.
“So a successful day,” Bell said. “I didn't even ask if he got hits or anything like that. For me, it was just more about him completing the game and then getting six innings of defense and then also that many at-bats.”
Bell said that Akiyama will be progressing toward playing a full nine-inning game as a part of his rehab.
Miley looks ahead to facing Cubs
Starter Wade Miley will get the nod as the Reds return home to take on the Cubs on Friday.
Miley has gone 2-2 and posted a 2.45 ERA in his four starts this season. In his last outing, Miley threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two vs. the Cardinals on Saturday.
The lefty has had some familiarity with the Cubs over his career. He has faced them 11 times, posting a 4.50 ERA. In those starts, Miley’s team has a 7-4 record against Chicago.
Miley said that he hopes to keep the Cubs in check Friday.
“I enjoy the competition. It's always fun; it's a great lineup over there, a lot of history with those guys,” Miley said. “Most of those guys, I have had a lot of cool battles with and cool at-bats with, so hopefully I can out trick them on this round for a little while.”
