SEATTLE -- Mariners reliever Ryan Garton cleared waivers on Thursday and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma, while outfielder Jacob Hannemann was claimed by the Cubs.
The moves open two spots on Seattle's 40-man roster, which now stands at 38.
Garton, 27, will remain in the Mariners' organization after clearing waivers. He posted a 1.54 ERA in 13 relief outings for Seattle after being acquired in an Aug. 6 trade from the Rays that also brought catcher Mike Marjama to the Mariners for left-hander Anthony Misiewicz and infielder Luis Rengifo, as well as a player to be named that turned out to be shortstop Osmy Gregorio.
Garton allowed just five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 11 2/3 innings after being brought up to the Mariners as a September callup.
Hannemann played in 11 games for Seattle after being claimed off waivers from the Cubs on Sept. 4, going 3-for-20 with a home run. The 26-year-old also hit .265/.324/.404 with 23 stolen bases in 80 games for Triple-A Iowa with the Cubs, who designated former Mariners utilityman Mike Freeman for assignment Thursday to open a spot for Hannemann's return.
