Royals-Guardians rained out June 5; makeup Aug. 26 as split DH

June 5th, 2024

CLEVELAND -- The Guardians had an opener lined up for Wednesday’s big tilt with the Royals. But as it turns out, there was no game to open.

An ugly forecast prompted a postponement of the AL Central showdown, which will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Aug. 26 at Progressive Field. The rescheduled game will start at 1:10 p.m. ET and the originally scheduled game will begin at 6:40 p.m. ET.

Fans holding tickets to the June 5 contest can use their exact same ticket to enter the 1:10 p.m. contest on Aug. 26 and do not have to exchange. They will not be allowed to attend the night game unless they hold a ticket for that game, as well. If fans are unable to attend the makeup game on Aug. 26, they will be able to make an exchange.

Cleveland, which has not used the opener strategy much since the concept came in vogue in MLB in 2018, had planned to give Wednesday’s starting nod to reliever Nick Sandlin before handing it off to “starter” Logan Allen. But with the unexpected off day, Allen is pushed back to start Friday’s game in Miami against the Marlins. Tanner Bibee was already lined up to start Thursday’s home series finale against the Royals and will do so, as planned.
