Mets prospect Mauricio earns LIDOM MVP honors
A breakout winter league performance for Ronny Mauricio was capped off with a prestigious honor.
The Mets’ No. 6 prospect was named the Dominican Winter League MVP after leading the league in several offensive categories for the Tigres del Licey.
The 21-year-old racked up 15 doubles, 31 RBIs and 54 hits with a .468 slugging percentage -- the best marks in the league -- while smacking five homers (second in the league), posting an .803 OPS (second), scoring 26 runs (second), compiling a .287 batting average (third) and swiping 10 bags (third) in 47 regular season games.
His 22 extra-base hits and 88 total bases also led the league by a wide margin; no other player racked up more than 12 XBH or 63 total bases.
Mauricio’s stellar effort comes on the heels of an interesting campaign in his first full taste of Double-A. He set a career high in homers (26), doubles (26) and steals (20), but he only drew 24 walks in 123 games and posted a .296 OBP while hitting .259 with Binghamton.
Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2017, Mauricio was once a Top 100 prospect who has not yet put up the offensive numbers that may have been expected of him. But Mets general manager Billy Eppler and owner Steve Cohen are committed to building a sustainable winner in Queens, and if Mauricio’s name was in any trade talks over the summer, his LIDOM performance will certainly provide a case that the dynamic switch-hitter could still be a part of future plans.
