Rox reach agreement with utility man O'Malley
Former Mariner signing Minors deal with invite to big league camp
DENVER -- The Rockies have reached an agreement with utility man Shawn O'Malley on a Minor League contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training, player development director Zach Wilson said Wednesday.
O'Malley, who turns 30 on Dec. 28, played 124 games from 2014-16 for the Angels ('14) and the Mariners (2015-16), hitting .231 with three home runs and 25 RBIs. He has played all three outfield positions, as well as shortstop, second and third base in the Majors. He will compete for a multi-position role with the Rockies.
While with the Mariners in 2017, O'Malley dealt with several injuries -- an emergency appendectomy before Opening Day, a shoulder injury in April and a concussion in August -- and never played a game in the Majors. The Mariners designated him for assignment in September.
