Rockies select 41 players during 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies concluded the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft today. The Rockies selected 30 players on the final day today. The Rockies selected 41 total players over the three days of the draft.

Of the 41 players the Rockies selected 25 were pitchers, six left-handed and 19 right-handed. The Rockies also drafted 10 infielders and six outfielders. Of the 41 players the Rockies selected, 22 were from a four-year university, while 14 were from high school and five were from a junior college.

The Rockies draft selections from rounds 1-10 are detailed below. A list of the Rockies picks is at the end of this release.

First Round Selection (3rd overall): RHP Jonathan Gray, University of Oklahoma

Gray, 21, was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First-Team in 2013. He was also a Second-Team member of the Louisville Slugger All-America team. In 17 starts for the Sooners thus far in 2013, Gray has gone 10-3 with a 1.64 ERA (126.1 ip, 23 er), 24 walks, 147 strikeouts and a .189 opponent's batting average. He has four complete games, two of which are complete game shutouts. Gray's Sooners were the 2013 Big 12 Tournament Champions and are playing Louisiana State in a Super Regional this weekend for a chance to go to the 2013 College World Series.

Gray was rated the 1^st overall player in the draft by Baseball America and the 2^nd overall player in the draft by MLB.com. The 6-foot-4, 239 pound right-hander was rated as having the best fastball in the draft by Baseball America. Gray's 147 strikeouts are the 2^nd-most NCAA Division I this season.

A native of Shawnee, OK, Gray was previously selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 13^th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft and by the New York Yankees in the 10^th round of the 2011 draft. He attended Eastern Oklahoma State College (Junior College) in 2011, where he posted a 6-2 record with a 2.89 ERA and 61 strikeouts prior to transferring to Oklahoma for the 2012 season. The right-hander went 8-4 with a 3.16 ERA (102.2 ip, 36 er), 42 walks and 104 strikeouts in 18 starts for the Sooners in 2012. 

Second Round Selection (42nd overall): 3B Ryan McCmahon, Mater Dei High School (CA)

McMahon, 18, hit .353 (36-for-102) with 11 doubles, 4 home runs, 23 RBI and 16 runs in 30 games played as a senior at Mater Dei High School in 2013. McMahon (6-foot-3, 190-pounds) was rated the 20^th best prospect in the draft from the state of California by Baseball America. McMahon was the Trinity League Most Valuable Player as a senior in 2013 for Mater Dei HS. McMahon was rated the 78^th overall player in the draft by MLB.com and the 82^nd player by Baseball America. 

Third Round Selection (70th overall): RHP Alex Balog, University of San Francisco (CA)

Balog, 20, went 3-4 with a 3.63 ERA (91.2 ip, 37 er), 33 walks and 67 strikeouts in 14 starts for the Dons as a junior in 2013. He led the University of San Francisco in innings pitched and strikeouts and held opponents to a .274 average against. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound right-hander was named to the 2011 West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team in his first season at USF. He was rated the 9^th overall player in the draft from the state of California, and the 9^th overall right-handed pitcher available in the draft by Baseball America. Balog was rated the 32^nd overall player in the draft by Baseball America and the 44^th overall player in the draft by MLB.com.

Third Round Selection (77th overall): LHP Sam Moll, University of Memphis (TN)

Moll, 21, went 9-3 with a 2.30 ERA (94.0 ip, 24 er), 32 walks and 106 strikeouts in 15 starts for the University of Memphis as a junior in 2013. Moll led the Tigers in wins, ERA and strikeouts in 2013 and was named to the All-Conference USA First-Team. In three seasons at Memphis, Moll has gone 17-9 with a 2.86 ERA in 230.0 innings pitched. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Moll had 213 career strikeouts, the 7^th-most in Memphis program history. Moll was rated the 117^th best prospect in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 5^th-best player from the state of Tennessee.

Fourth Round Selection (109th overall): RF Jordan Patterson, University of South Alabama

Patterson, 21, hit .352 (82-for-233) with 25 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 49 RBI and 69 runs scored in 63 games for South Alabama as a junior in 2013. He led the Jaguars in hits, doubles, total bases (121), runs and on-base percentage (.485). Patterson was the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2013, becoming the sixth Jaguar all-time to win the award and first since David Freese in 2006. Patterson was rated the 6^th-best player in the draft from the state of Alabama by Baseball America.

Fifth Round Selection (139th overall): RHP Blake Shouse, Middle Georgia College

Shouse, 20, led Middle Georgia College with his 25 appearances in 2013 while going 2-0 with 12 saves, a 1.07 ERA (25.1 ip, 3 er), 7 walks and 35 strikeouts. Shouse was also a regular infielder for the Warriors, and hit .309 (59-for-191) with 15 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run and 29 RBI in 51 games. Shouse was rated the 14^th-best player in the draft from the state of Georgia by Baseball America, as well as the state's 5^th-best pitcher.

Sixth Round Selection (169th overall): INF Dominic Nunez, Elk Grove High School (CA)

Nunez, 18, hit .449 (40-for-89) with 13 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 25 RBI and 34 runs scored in 30 games during his senior season at Elk Grove High School in Sacramento, CA. Nunez also played on the 2012 USA Baseball 18-Under National Team that won the 2012 IBAF Junior AAA/18U World Championship in Seoul, South Korea. He hit .316 with 10 runs and 8 RBI in 13 games for the 18U USA Baseball Team at the World Championships. Nunez was rated the 65^th overall player in the draft by Baseball America and the 16^th-best player from the state of California.

Seventh Round Selection (199th overall): RHP Konner Wade, University of Arizona

Wade, 21, was named a 2013 Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American (Second-Team) and went 5-6 with a 4.30 ERA (104.2 ip, 50 er), 24 walks and 64 strikeouts in 15 starts for the Wildcats as a junior in 2013. Wade helped lead the Wildcats to the 2012 College World Series Championship. He was a member of the 2012 College World Series All-Tournament Team, as he tossed two complete games at the 2012 CWS. Wade was rated the 9^th-best player in the draft from the state of Arizona by Baseball America.

Eighth Round Selection (229th overall): CF Terry McClure, Riverwood International Charter School (GA)

McClure, 17, batted .386 (34-for-88) with 9 doubles, 8 home runs, 39 RBI and 34 runs for the Riverwood Raiders in Sandy Springs, GA. McClure was named to the Rawlings Preseason All-American Team in 2013. McClure was rated the 164^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the 10^th overall player from the state of Georgia.

Ninth Round Selection (259th overall): SS Patrick Valaika, UCLA

Valaika, 20, has hit .260 (58-for-223) with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, 42 RBI, 31 runs and 8 stolen bases in 59 games for the Bruins as a junior in 2013. Valaika leads the Bruins in extra-base hits (21), doubles, home runs and RBI while playing shortstop. He has helped lead UCLA to the Super Regional this season, where they will play Cal. State Fullerton for the chance to advance to the College World Series. Valaika was rated the 94^th-best prospect in the draft from the state of California by Baseball America. 

10th Round Selection (289th overall): OF Michael Tauchman, Bradley University (IL)

Tauchman, 22, batted .425 (79-for-186) with 16 doubles, 5 triples, 2 home runs, 41 RBI, 52 runs and 28 stolen bases in 49 games as a senior for the Bradley Braves in 2013. Tauchman was named a Second-Team member of the 2013 Louisville Slugger All-American squad. Additionally, Tauchman was the 2013 Joe Carter Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, a member of the 2013 MVC First-Team All-Conference squad, a MVC All-Defensive Team member and a MVC Scholar Athlete First-Team member. Tauchman leads Division I Baseball with his .425 batting average and is 4^th with his .513 on-base percentage. The 6-foot-2 left-handed hitter was rated the 5^th-best player in the draft from the state of Illinois by Baseball America.

Additionally, with the club's 22^nd round selection (649^th overall) the Rockies selected shortstop Brody Weiss out of Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, CO. Weiss is the son of Rockies Manager Walt Weiss. In addition to Weiss, the Rockies selected another local product in right-handed pitcher Alec Hansen from Loveland High School in Loveland, CO.

The Rockies 24^th round selection was right-handed pitcher Hunter Brothers from Lipscomb University. Brothers is the younger brother of current Rockies left-handed pitcher Rex Brothers. In the 35^th round, Colorado selected third baseman Ronnie Gideon from Hallsville High School in Hallsville, TX. Gideon is the son of Rockies Development Supervisor at Short-Season Tri-City, Ron Gideon.
