Edwards ends 21-year run as Miller Park's voice

MILWAUKEE -- Robb Edwards’ baritone voice carried throughout Miller Park for the final time Sunday, when the longtime public address announcer announced the final batters of his 21-year run as the in-stadium voice of Brewers baseball.

A fixture of Milwaukee radio before he became associated with baseball, Edwards started his second career in 1998 as a part-time fill-in for the iconic voice of County Stadium, Bob Betts. He took over public address duties full-time from 1999 until this season, when his schedule was pared to 21 games, one for each of his years on the mic. He shared PA duties Sunday with Mark Richards, the new voice of Miller Park.

“Since I’ve been an adult, I’ve wanted to be involved with music -- radio -- and baseball,” Edwards said. “That became reality.”

Edwards fell in love with the sport while growing up in the suburbs of Chicago. He moved to the Milwaukee area in 1959 and filled roles at various radio stations over the years, including hosting the morning show on Newsradio 620 WTMJ for 16 years from 1985-2000.

In recognition of his longtime service, the Brewers renamed their scoreboard control room in Edwards’ honor. A plaque hung there starting Sunday.

“That means a whole heck of a lot,” Edwards said. “I don’t think I even thought about it to begin with. I thought, ‘I don’t deserve something like that!’ I did my job, I was happy when I did it, and I worked for people I really enjoy. To me, that ties it all up.”
