What if baseball came to Wrexham AFC?
Unless you're a soccer fanatic, you were likely introduced to Wrexham AFC -- the beloved Welsh soccer (or football) team that was recently promoted to League One of the English Football League -- through Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds' docuseries, "Welcome to Wrexham."
Having enjoyed his introduction to the wild world of soccer by the diehard fans who live in Wrexham, McElhenney wanted to return the favor: Why not bring baseball to STōK Cae Ras, better known to supporters as The Racehorse Ground?
"I didn't know the first thing about football," McElhenney said about his soccer knowledge before he and Reynolds purchased the team. He added, "It's a childhood dream to partner with Major League Baseball and share my love of America's Favorite Pastime with the world."
So, during a recent home match, McElhenney brought his beloved Phillie Phanatic along with Mr. and Mrs. Met to the ground. They did a little sightseeing, stopped by The Turf and -- naturally -- got into a sideline mascot race.
To help share just how similar -- or perhaps, really, not all that similar -- the two sports are, MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian and Wrexham's Mark Griffiths then got into the fun and presented a match as if it were a baseball game. Check out the video above for proof and then get ready for the London Series when the Mets and Phillies play each other at London Stadium on June 8-9.
