Renteria, Sox eye goals beyond playoff berth
CHICAGO -- Manager Rick Renteria didn’t discuss any specific celebratory plans for the White Sox clinching a postseason spot, which could happen within the next few days, during his Wednesday Zoom session with the media.
Renteria acknowledged it’s a good time for the organization. But the players and staff also want to do more than simply get there.
Despite a 5-1 loss to the Twins on Wednesday night, the White Sox magic number to clinch a postseason berth dropped to one.
“Obviously, that's the first step. Everybody understands that once any club gets in, anything can happen,” Renteria said. “So obviously getting in is very, very important, but you still have a lot of things to try to accomplish.
“That's what the guys are focused on. They'll be able to manage their emotions with the first step, but there's still a lot to be done. We'll deal with this today or tomorrow, whenever it is, as we should with calm, like we've been there before. And then continue to move forward like you're getting ready for the next phase.”
Anderson heating up in September
For a second straight season, the month of September belongs to Tim Anderson.
The White Sox shortstop slashed .374/.400/.566 over 23 games in September 2019 on his way to posting the top average in MLB, winning the American League batting title. He also scored 21 runs and added four home runs and nine RBIs.
Entering Wednesday’s contest, Anderson had a slash line of .464/.492/.625 with 15 runs scored, two home runs and eight RBIs in his first 13 September games. He was 12-for-19 over his previous four games, with a four-hit effort, two three-hit games and one game with two singles.
“He's very special,” catcher James McCann said. “The things that he's doing at the plate right now, you just kind of sit back and enjoy, because it doesn't happen. The way that he's been able to spray the ball all over the field and consistently get hits -- and big hits, too -- it's special.”
Spring Training 2021 schedule announced
Wednesday’s announcement of the 2021 Cactus League schedule briefly switched the focus from the White Sox great success in 2020 to the upcoming campaign.
Cactus League action begins on Feb. 27 for the White Sox as they take on the Brewers at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz., marking their 13th year at their Spring Training home. They will play 15 home games, including one against the Cubs on March 19. The White Sox also play the Cubs at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., three times in five days beginning on March 26. They end the Cactus League slate with back-to-back games against the Cubs on March 29-30.
The White Sox 2021 regular season begins April 1, when they'll face the Angels on the road. Their home opener is scheduled for April 8 against the Royals.
White Sox celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month
The White Sox have activities planned in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, with one event having already taken place.
Last Thursday, Chicago held the Los White Sox Lotería Night on the team’s YouTube channel, inviting fans to play along from home live using a White Sox-themed deck of cards. The event marked the first time a club has held a live virtual version of the traditional game.
In the coming weeks, the White Sox also will share highlights and images honoring the team’s former and current Latino players across social-media channels, as well as at Guaranteed Rate Field. Additionally, content offering key insights from a recent “Game Changers: Latinos Reshaping the Sports Journalism Industry” virtual panel, as well as feature stories highlighting the team’s commitment to the Hispanic community, are scheduled to run in a digital program and on the Inside the Sox blog.
Worth noting
• Designated hitter Edwin Encarnación was out of Wednesday night’s lineup, but Renteria said the veteran slugger will be back Thursday afternoon.
“You might see him for the next five, six, seven days,” Renteria said. “We're trying to do everything we can to get everybody on track."
• The White Sox entered Wednesday's game with a 14-1 mark at home since starting 2-8 at Guaranteed Rate Field. They have also put together three separate winning streaks of six-plus games overall, their most in a season since 2010.
