Hoskins, Rodriguez named Players of the Week
Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins and Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez are in true midseason form. On Tuesday, they were named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet.
Hoskins claimed this honor for the first time in his career after leading the Majors in home runs (four), slugging percentage (1.158) and OPS (1.678) last week.
It’s the continuation of what has been a month-long hot streak as Hoskins has racked 17 extra-base hits, 17 runs, 17 RBIs and 17 walks over his past 26 games.
The Phillies went 17-9 during that span. They have also won five of eight games since a broken left thumb sidelined reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper on June 25. They sit just one game out of a playoff spot, largely thanks to Hoskins’ performance.
The 21-year-old Rodríguez has quickly blossomed into a bona fide star. He continued his extended hot stretch at the plate by posting a 1.273 OPS with three homers, seven runs and six RBIs last week. He also added one stolen base to his AL-best total of 20 steals.
Rodríguez, the AL Rookie of the Month for June, has recorded a .299/.356/.598 slash line with 14 dingers and 32 RBIs over his previous 48 games. And with his home run Monday against the Padres, he became the first player since at least 1900 with 15 HRs and 20 steals in his first 81 career games.
Rodríguez joins first baseman Ty France as the Mariners who have received Player of the Week recognition this season.
