Hoskins torments Mets, slugs first HR with Brewers
NEW YORK -- Rhys Hoskins got heavy boos from the Citi Field crowd on Saturday. And he responded with two big swings of the bat.
Hoskins ripped a two-run single in his first at-bat of the game, then crushed his first home run of the season in his second at-bat … a day after his hard slide into second baseman Jeff McNeil sparked a benches-clearing standoff between the Brewers and Mets on Opening Day.
In the first inning, Hoskins jumped on the first pitch he saw from Luis Severino and lined it down the left-field line for his first hit of the season, giving Milwaukee a 3-0 lead.
Then he took Severino deep to left field two innings later -- and gave a little hop-step as he went into his home run trot.
It wasn't Hoskins' first dramatic home run against the Mets.
The slugging first baseman is in his first season with the Brewers, but Hoskins was a longtime nemesis of the Mets from his days with the rival Phillies. He memorably homered off Jacob Rhame on April 24, 2019 -- days after the Mets reliever had thrown a high fastball behind his head -- and went into a home run trot that lasted over 34 seconds.
