Tigers prospect Rivera suspended for PEDs
Struggling 2017 second rounder receives 80-game punishment
DETROIT -- One-time Tigers second-round pick Reynaldo Rivera, a first baseman/outfielder at Class A West Michigan, received an 80-game suspension without pay from Major League Baseball on Wednesday after testing positive for Tenbolone, a performance-enhancing substance.
The suspension is effective immediately, not only ending Rivera’s 2019 campaign, but carrying into the start of next season. Rivera was placed on West Michigan’s restricted list Tuesday.
It’s the latest hurdle in what has been a rough couple years for the former Perfect Game/Rawlings Junior College Player of the Year. The Tigers used the 57th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft on Rivera, a 6-foot-6 slugger who hit 20 homers and 20 doubles with 73 RBIs in just under 250 plate appearances at Chipola Junior College while leading the school to a JuCo World Series title.
The Tigers saw Rivera as a project at the time, but he has struggled to translate his ability to pro ball. Rivera opened the year at Class A Advanced Lakeland but hit just .178 (16-for-90) with three home runs, eight RBIs and 34 strikeouts before being moved to West Michigan, where he had also spent the entire 2018 season.
Rivera batted .228 (45-for-197) for the Whitecaps this year with four homers, 19 RBIs, 72 strikeouts and a .650 OPS. The 22-year-old owns a .218 batting average, .353 slugging percentage and .638 OPS in 257 career Minor League games.
Also suspended was shortstop Pavin Parks, who received a 52-game suspension after testing positive for Trenbolone, the same substance for which Rivera was suspended. The 22-year-old Parks, the Tigers’ 36th-round Draft pick earlier this year, was playing in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he batted 0-for-19 in seven games with six walks and seven strikeouts.
