Olson exits early with shoulder soreness in Tigers' win

TORONTO -- ’s first start back from the break was cut short due to right shoulder soreness.

The right-hander pitched just two innings in the Tigers’ 7-3 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, putting a pair of zeros on the Rogers Centre board despite allowing two walks and one single in that span.

Olson seemed to struggle with the command of his slider and four-seam fastball during the outing, but he skirted out of trouble due to his trusted sinker, which induced inning-ending double plays in each of his two frames.

Alex Faedo quickly warmed up to replace Olson in the third inning, pitching two scoreless innings with three strikeouts before giving way to Kenta Maeda in the fifth.

It’s unclear if Olson will miss any time due to this issue, and updates should follow once the Tigers have a chance to run more tests on his shoulder. Still, the early exit is a tough blow for a young pitcher in the midst of a great sophomore season despite pitching with little run support for most of his campaign.

Based on how the season has gone, maybe it’s fitting that the Tigers’ bats didn’t break out until after Olson’s departure. The visitors took a one-run lead on an RBI double by Andy Ibáñez in the fifth before putting together a six-run sixth ignited by a grand slam off the bat of Jake Rogers.

Maeda ran into trouble in the bottom half of the inning, but the big lead allowed manager A.J. Hinch to keep the veteran righty in the game instead of reaching for the bullpen again, a welcome development considering the uncertainty around Olson’s early departure.

With the exception of a scary moment on May 20 -- when he took a 101.8 mph comebacker off his body and exited his start in Kansas City -- this has been a healthy season for Olson, who now owns a 3.23 ERA. He’s been a crucial piece of a Tigers’ rotation whose 3.87 starters’ ERA entering Saturday ranked 10th in the Majors and sixth in the American League.

Seeing as how right-hander Casey Mize is not expected back from the IL until at least the end of the month as he recovers from a left hamstring strain, the Tigers would be in a tough position if Olson were to miss any starts. Detroit has turned to rookie Keider Montero (No. 6 prospect) to fill some gaps in the rotation -- either for Mize or Jack Flaherty when he was forced to skip a start with a lower back issue.

Next in line may be Maeda, who was moved to the bullpen shortly before the All-Star break after posting a 7.26 ERA through 16 starts. No. 5 prospect Ty Madden could also be a candidate to make his big league debut, though he would need to be added to the 40-man roster.
