Reds acquire Casali from Rays, option Cruz
May 31st, 2018
The Reds announced on Thursday they've acquired catcher Curt Casali from the Rays in exchange for cash and optioned backup catcher Tony Cruz to Triple-A Louisville.
Casali, who has been with Triple-A Durham all season and has hit .274/.327/.453 with 20 RBIs over 28 games, will likely fill in as the backup to Tucker Barnhart. Over four partial big league seasons with the Rays, the 29-year-old is a career .199/.285/.385 hitter. He played in just nine games last year.
Cruz had been filling in as Barnhart's backup after the club dealt Devin Mesoraco to the Mets for Matt Harvey. He went 4-for-26 over nine games with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
