CINCINNATI -- The Reds have talked to a bunch of free-agent relievers this offseason and during the Winter Meetings this week. A source told MLB.com on Friday that one of those bullpen arms is right-hander Craig Stammen.
Stammen, 33, pitched for the Padres in 2017 and is a native of Ohio. He went to Versailles High School and the University of Dayton.
It is still unclear what kind of offer Stammen -- an eight-year Major League veteran -- received from Cincinnati.
In 60 appearances for the Padres last season, Stammen posted a 3.14 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 80 1/3 innings. Able to throw 91-93 mph, he fits the profile Cincinnati wants of someone who is versatile and able to work multiple innings.
Stammen pitched for the Nationals from 2009-15, and his best year out of the bullpen was in '12, when he had a 2.34 ERA over 59 appearances.
For most of 2015-16, Stammen was working his way back after he had surgery to repair two torn flexor tendons in his right forearm. He spent '16 in the Indians' Minor League system before finding a big league home with the Padres last season.
