We also identify the prospect who just missed the Top 30 list, a player who didn't make the big league Opening Day roster but should make an impact this year, a prospect who is ready to break out in 2019 and the team's best defensive prospect.

Just missed the Top 30: Eduardo Lopez
Signed for $1.15 million out of the Dominican Republic in July, Lopez is a switch-hitter with promising bat-to-ball skills and a contact-oriented approach. Though he's an average runner, his advanced defensive instincts may allow him to stick in center field.

On the shelf: Jay Groome
The highly touted lefty, who has the highest ceiling among Boston's pitching prospects, is on the Greenville injured list as he continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery last May. Catcher Roldani Baldwin broke an ankle sliding near the end of Spring Training and is on the IL at Salem.

Impact prospect: Darwinzon Hernandez
Moved to the bullpen when he was promoted to Double-A late last year, Hernandez has taken quickly to the new role, showing true late-inning potential with his high-spin heater in the mid- to upper-90s and swing-and-miss slider. He posted a 0.82 ERA, .184 BAA and 12 strikeouts over 11 innings this spring (six appearances) and was among the Red Sox final cuts from camp. He’s a member of Boston’s 40-man roster and poised to reach the Majors early in the season.

Breakout prospect: Hernandez
Hernandez followed up a strong regular season with an impressive performance in the Arizona Fall League. While the 22-year-old struggled with command -- an issue that has plagued him throughout his career -- walking 66 over 107 innings this year, he racked up 134 strikeouts. In the AFL, Hernandez pitched out of the bullpen -- where his fastball-slider combination can form a dominant pairing -- and yielded only three runs (two earned) over 11 1/3 innings.

Best defensive prospect: Bobby Dalbec
Dalbec has always possessed a strong arm and has worked hard to improve his agility and range at third base, with several Red Sox officials rating him as a plus defender and scouts outside the organization grading him more as solid. He also owns prodigious raw power and ranked second in the Minors in extra-base hits (70) and RBIs (109) last year, and fourth in homers (32).
