Knee sprain sends JBJ to disabled list
DETROIT -- The Red Sox placed Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day disabled list prior to Tuesday night's game against the Orioles, but at this point, the belief is that the center fielder's right knee sprain will be a short-term ailment.
With the move retroactive to Sunday, Bradley could return as soon as April 19 at Toronto. The Red Sox also activated Thomas Pomeranz from the 10-day DL for his start tonight and reinstated Xander Bogaerts from the bereavement list.
In Bradley's absence, left fielder Andrew Benintendi will move to center -- his natural position. Chris Young and Brock Holt will share the at-bats in left field, depending on matchups.
Bradley sustained the injury when his left foot gave out into the dirt while he was rounding first after a flyout on Saturday, and he landed on his right knee.
On Sunday morning, Bradley underwent an MRI at a Detroit-area hospital which showed swelling and a sprain.
Bradley flew to Boston on Monday, where he was given a full work-up by head team orthopedist Peter Asnis.
"When he's first ready is when he'll be back in the lineup," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "I don't have the full report from Dr. Asnis, but the decision was made -- he's going to need some time. Hopefully it's just the 10 days. We'll see. He'll be out there first available."
Considering Bradley's importance to the Red Sox on offense and defense, there is relief that he shouldn't be out very long.
"Everything points in that direction right now," said Farrell. "So again, I don't have the all information to give you a time frame. I know Jackie, as tough a kid as he is, he'll want to play soon."
In four games, Bradley is hitting .286 with no homers and two RBIs. He made standout plays on defense in each game, including two grabs that were rated as 4-star catches by Statcast™ on Saturday.
