Boston adds Robles, Holland as non-roster invitees
The Red Sox on Monday agreed to Minor League deals with Spring Training invites with right-handed reliever Hansel Robles and left-hander Derek Holland.
Robles, 31, was a Trade Deadline acquisition by Boston last year, and he made 27 appearances down the stretch for the Red Sox, posting a 3.60 ERA with a 30 percent strikeout rate. He began the season with the Twins, pitching to a 4.91 ERA in 45 appearances for Minnesota.
Overall, Robles has a 4.00 ERA over seven Major League seasons. Prior to joining the Twins in 2021, he pitched for the Mets (2015-18) and Angels (2018-20).
Holland made 39 appearances (38 in relief) for the Tigers last season, and he had a 5.07 ERA. In fact, Holland has been used almost exclusively as a reliever since 2019.
By re-signing Robles, the Red Sox added a much-needed right-handed arm to a bullpen that is heavily left-handed, particularly after the offseason signings of Jake Diekman and Matt Strahm to bolster a relief corps that already includes lefties Josh Taylor, Austin Davis and Darwinzon Hernandez.
Boston had a middling bullpen last season that was ranked 10th in the AL with a 3.99 ERA.
