Red Sox announce Major League field staff updates
BOSTON, MA - Red Sox President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski today announced the following personnel moves regarding the major league field staff:
- John Farrell will return to his role as manager for the 2016 season.
- Torey Lovullo will return as bench coach for the 2016 season.
- Third base coach Brian Butterfield, hitting coach Chili Davis, assistant hitting coach Victor Rodriguez, and pitching coach Carl Willis will all be retained. Dana LeVangie, who moved into the role of interim bench coach in August, will also be retained and move back to his role as bullpen coach.
- The contracts of first base coach Arnie Beyeler and strength and conditioning coach Pat Sandora have not been renewed.
- Interim bullpen coach Bob Kipper will return to his duties as pitching coach for Triple-A Pawtucket next season.
Farrell, 53, who has been on medical leave since August 14 after being diagnosed with Stage 1 Lymphoma, completed chemotherapy treatments in Boston this past week. Provided a clean bill of health, he will return to his post in the dugout for the 2016 season. Named the 46th manager in Red Sox history on October 21, 2012, the New Jersey native led the club to its eighth World Series championship in 2013, his first year on the job. Over his three seasons at the helm (2013-15) in Boston, Farrell has guided the Red Sox to a 246-243 (.503) record. In February, he signed a two-year contract extension taking him through the 2017 season, with a club option for 2018.
Lovullo, 50, has signed a two-year contract extension with the club taking him through the 2017 season. As the result of signing the extension and his loyalty and commitment to the club and Farrell, Lovullo waived the right to pursue any major league managerial openings in the 2015-16 offseason. Serving as Boston's interim manager since Farrell went on medical leave on August 14, he has guided the Red Sox to a 28-19 (.596) record. The Santa Monica, CA native, who was named Red Sox bench coach on October 26, 2012, is in his second stint in the organization after having managed Triple-A Pawtucket for the 2010 season.
Beyeler, 51, held the role of first base coach and outfield instructor for each of the last three seasons with the Red Sox. Originally from Moab, UT, Beyeler spent 12 seasons in the organization, nine as a manager in Boston's minor league system for Short-A Lowell (2000-01), Single-A Augusta (2002), Double-A Portland (2007-10), and Pawtucket (2011-12). He led the 2012 PawSox to the Governor's Cup title.
Sandora had served as the Red Sox strength and conditioning coach for each of the last four seasons (since 2012). Prior to his role with the major league club, he was Boston's minor league strength and conditioning coordinator from 2007-11.
